Shilpee is a group of young theatre artists established in 2006. We seven creative youths in this group belong to different skills like acting, painting, singing, dancing etc. Theatre is the work we love. We feel theatre is the only medium through which we can truly express what we feel. For us theatre carries the potentiality to communicate.

We believe creativity is not just for entertainment. It should bear in itself social contextuality and relevance. There are many things in our society at present that we are not happy with. We try to express all those dissatisfactions and differences by the medium of theatre. We also give expression to beautiful aspects existing in the society through theatre. All these expressions are for the creation of a laissez-faire society. They are in favor of suppressed and marginalized people.

Theatre has been a related and integral part of society over a long period of time. But this genre has not been successful in achieving an independent and reputable form of its own. Our efforts are aimed at establishing it as an independent and respected creative genre of art.

We believe that theatre has a role to play for the political and social transformation of a country. Theatre artists should have a political voice and base. We, the youths in Shilpee, have taken active part in the political and social movements in the past.

Artistic Endeavour

We keep staging proscenium theatre on contemporary issues. Likewise, other dimensions of theatre- street theatre, forum theatre and new experiments are our regular activities. Similarly, we also stage the plays and works of playwrights from home and abroad. There are also other activities supporting the artistic theatre like workshop, training, and cooperation and collaboration with foreign artists.

 

Cultural Endeavour
Culture is an important grounding of theatre. Shilpee incorporates local, indigenous and folk culture in its theatrical activities. For cultural preservation and its refinement, we incorporate several cultural elements in our plays and present them.
 

 

Production of skilled theatre artists is another activity of Shilpee. There is a dearth of appropriate training centre for producing skilled theatre artists in Nepal, which is extremely essential for a standard theatre. Therefore Shilpee arranges theatre trainings with a view to produce skilled theatre artists among the new generation. Trainings are conducted by capable trainers from home and abroad.
 

Theatre and Education

There is a strong possibility of theatre in educational institutions, especially schools. Theatre can be incorporated in the school curriculum. Theatre can be a good means of explaining various topics in the curriculum in an easy way. Moreover, theatre is a field of study in itself.
